MMA Workout Routine - Stamina and Endurance in Mixed Martial Arts

You could say I'm an old-timer when it comes to MMA. And I guess I've been doing the MMA workout routine for about 10 years.

I first got involved in Gracie jujitsu or as it is sometimes referred to - Brazilian jujitsu - with Craig Kukuk.

Craig was teaching BJJ in Red Bank New Jersey. he had just recently formed an alliance with Renzo Gracie and they were selling their training tapes in Black Belt Magazine.

Unfortunately like most people that start out in BJJ - you find out that your conditioning and stamina stinks.

So I sought out a better way to perform my MMA workout routine. A way in which nobody at that time was even using, because it was 1993 and mixed martial arts was just coming onto the scene.

Just to give you an idea of how far the mixed martial arts workout routines have come, when I asked most of the martial artists around me how to improve conditioning and stamina for grappling their answer was do more jujitsu.

So I decided to do some reading on the subject of strength and conditioning. Now mind you, I was a wrestler in high school and college so I really had some idea of what to do.

I researched what the NFL football teams were doing in their strength and conditioning programs. What I found was that they were applying a concept that hadn't even been named yet. Today you may know it as "High-Intensity Interval Training."

Originally Ultimate Fighting or mixed martial arts fights were not at all like boxing or wrestling matches. If you remember Royce Gracie - his fights had no time limits so you had an opportunity to tire out your opponent. Today, fights in the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC as it's called - can vary from three minute to five minute rounds depending on the fight.

Endurance and stamina has become even more important as part of an MMA workout routine.

So much so, that recently Tito Ortiz purchased Oscar De La Hoya's boxing camp at Big Bear Lake for a reported $2.1 million.

Tito, has known the benefits of high-altitude training to get himself and the people that he trained with in great physical condition. Stamina and endurance are critical in your success and a good MMA workout routine should include some high altitude training.
